Contatto

Contatto is an experiment trying to give viewers a vague idea of what it is like having a restricted perception of the world, because you´re blind. Sandra, Loretta and Salvatore live in Florence, Italy, and they are all very active in the local Blind Union. When I spoke to them about my project they were very enthusiastic and after I explained the idea behind it, I left them free to talk about whatever they wanted. Contatto is in fact a recording of the resulting conversation about their ways of "seeing". The viewers never see the speakers´ faces, but only perceive them through the sound of their voices. In the meantime the camera moves over objects very closely trying to simulate the sense of touch, or plays on blurred or no images at all, to give the idea of restricted perception. Sometimes there is a play on total lack of one element, vision or sound, so the viewer has to rely on the remaining senses.
